Start with A Certain Magical Index if you want the original gateway. Start with A Certain Scientific Railgun if Mikoto Misaka and the science side interest you more. We do not recommend starting with Accelerator.

Toaru is not three successive seasons with different names. Index is the central source story; Railgun and Accelerator follow other characters within its world. Their events overlap, and following the fictional calendar is not the same as following how the anime was released.

This guide keeps those choices separate. You can discover Academy City without interrupting every few episodes to consult a timeline.

Reference review: October 3, 2026. Viewing routes are editorial recommendations, not an official mandated order.

One setting, three different perspectives

A Certain Magical Index

Touma Kamijo encounters the collision between Academy City's scientific institutions and the wider magical world. Choose this gateway for the broadest introduction to the franchise's factions and conflicts.

Its own sequence: Index → Index II → Index III. Roman numerals identify the television sequels.

Take the anime release route

A Certain Scientific Railgun

Mikoto Misaka and her friends bring Academy City's students, abilities, and research systems into the foreground. Railgun shares events with Index but develops its own viewpoints and stories.

Its own sequence: Railgun → Railgun S → Railgun T. S and T are different seasons, not bonus editions of season one.

Take the science-first route

A Certain Scientific Accelerator

This spin-off assumes background that Index introduces. Its title character's situation and relationships are easier to understand after that foundation.

Our minimum preparation: finish Index season one before starting Accelerator.

Understand the shared history

The easiest principal-anime route: release order

This is our default recommendation if you want both sides of the world without building an episode-by-episode chronology. Keep each season intact. A later season may revisit an earlier period from a different perspective; that is expected. This checklist covers the principal television series, the feature film, and the Railgun OVA, not every short bonus production.

Tick off each stop as you finish. These controls are a temporary page-session aid, not a saved watch-history account.

  1. The original anime gateway. Establish Touma, Index, Academy City, and the background needed for the wider branches.

  2. Shift to Mikoto's perspective. Do not interpret this as a story that starts only after Index's finale.

  3. An optional extra after the first Railgun season. It is not Railgun S.

  4. Resume the central series rather than waiting for every science-side story to catch up.

  5. The Index film is a side story, not Index III. After Index II is a practical context-rich placement.

  6. Return to Mikoto's story for a much fuller treatment of shared material from her side.

  7. Continue Index's central adaptation. This is not the third Railgun season.

  8. Explore another science-side branch. Its late release position does not mean its events take place after everything in Index III.

  9. Continue after Railgun S. Keep its listed episodes in order rather than arranging them around Index III simply because T was released later.

The Railgun-first route: a different introduction

If you are here for Mikoto, our alternative is Railgun → Railgun S → Index → Index II → The Miracle of Endymion → Railgun T → Accelerator → Index III. The film and OVA remain optional side material; this is an editorial viewing path, not release order or strict chronology.

This approach lets Railgun S develop its central shared storyline before you see the shorter Index treatment. Adding Index before Railgun T supplies broader context for familiar characters and overlapping developments.

It is a trade-off, not a correction of a supposedly wrong official order. You meet parts of the world from Mikoto's side first and spend longer away from the magical storyline. If the wider setting is what attracted you, use the release route instead.

Can I watch only Railgun?

You can follow Railgun, S, and T as a character-focused entry into the setting. But they are spin-offs within a shared world, not a guarantee that every crossover or background event is explained independently. Index adds context that a Railgun-only route leaves outside the frame.

The Sisters arc: repeated events, not a duplicate season

Index and Railgun S cover shared events connected to the Sisters storyline. Railgun's treatment spends substantially more time with Mikoto's experience. Seeing the same conflict twice does not mean your streaming service has listed the wrong sequel.

We avoid describing the outcome here. The meaningful viewing choice is which perspective you want first: the original Index introduction or Railgun's longer character-centered buildup.

Our recommendation: do not start with strict chronology. A true calendar route requires splitting episodes and arcs across several shows. A list that rearranges whole seasons cannot accurately promise to place every event in order.

Why not insert Accelerator wherever it sits on the calendar?

Calendar placement and useful preparation are separate questions. Accelerator relies on relationships and circumstances established in Index. Finish that introduction first; on a rewatch, you can investigate how its events fit alongside the other branches.

Movies, mini-specials, and announced continuations

The Miracle of Endymion is the feature-film branch of Index. Watch it after Index II for this guide's route. That recommendation is about familiarity with the cast, not a claim that the film happens after every event in season two.

The Railgun OVA can follow the first Railgun season. Short comedy specials such as Index-tan are bonus material, not replacements for a television season.

A fourth Railgun season was announced in February 2025. An announcement is not the same as an available season. Check the official Toaru project updates for scheduling and regional distribution before adding new episodes to your queue.

Toaru watch order FAQ

Should I start with Index or Railgun?

Index is our default for the broad franchise. Railgun is a reasonable alternative if Mikoto and Academy City's science side are your priority. Use one of the clearly labeled routes above rather than pretending they are the same order.

Is Railgun S season two?

Yes. The Railgun television sequence is Railgun, Railgun S, then Railgun T.

Do I need Index before Accelerator?

We recommend finishing Index season one first. That supplies character background that makes Accelerator a much less confusing starting experience.

Is Railgun a sequel to Index?

It is a spin-off sharing the same setting and overlapping events, not simply the next season after Index ends.

Is release order the same as chronology?

No. Later-produced series revisit earlier periods. Our release route keeps seasons intact; it does not claim to sort every fictional day.

Does Index III adapt every Index novel?

No. The light-novel franchise extends beyond the material covered by the existing Index television adaptation. A finished anime season is not proof that the source story has ended.

Where can I stream the whole franchise?

Check the individual titles in your region. Rights and catalog listings vary; this guide does not promise that one service has every season, movie, and special.
