FIHEROE viewing navigator · Spoiler-light
The short answer: start with Bakemonogatari. For a first watch, our recommendation is the core novel-publication route: watch Kizumonogatari next, move Hanamonogatari into Second Season, and place Koyomimonogatari before Owarimonogatari.
Monogatari is not confusing because you missed a secret season. Its anime release schedule, novel sequence, and fictional calendar are three different maps. This guide separates them so you can spend less time sorting titles and more time following the conversation.

Three orders, three different experiences
Nisio Isin's novels are the source of Shaft's Monogatari anime. The story follows Koyomi Araragi and encounters with supernatural oddities, but its real engine is conversation: what people reveal, conceal, misunderstand, and finally admit. A flashback is not necessarily a detour. Sometimes it is the point.
01 · Novel-publication route
Our first-watch pick. Follow the source sequence for the core adaptations. It brings the vampire origin story forward and restores two important placements disrupted by the anime schedule.
Follow this route02 · Anime release route
For the historical experience. See how the adaptation reached its original audience. Later-released entries fill gaps that earlier viewers had to live with.
Compare the releases03 · Story chronology
Better as a rewatch project. Sort events by when they happen in-universe. This requires splitting some series into individual arcs or episodes, not simply rearranging season names.
Understand the trade-offYour core Monogatari watch checklist
This is our recommended route through the core anime, not a claim that the anime aired in this order. Check off entries as you go. The boxes are a page-session aid, not a saved account tracker.
-
Begin here and watch all 15 episodes. Only the first 12 originally aired on television; the remaining three were distributed online. A listing that stops at episode 12 does not give you the complete series.
-
Watch Part 1: Tekketsu, Part 2: Nekketsu, then Part 3: Reiketsu. These films explain Araragi's vampire origin. The first two opened in 2016; the third followed in January 2017.
-
Continue with Araragi's sisters and the question of what separates the genuine from the counterfeit.
-
Also listed as Nekomonogatari (Kuro). Keep it here for the novel-publication route, even though its events precede Bakemonogatari.
-
Start Second Season with these two story arcs. White is also written as Shiro. Use arc names rather than assuming every streaming edition numbers recap episodes identically.
-
Insert this five-episode series here. It aired separately in 2014, but its novel position is between Kabukimonogatari and Otorimonogatari.
-
Finish the remaining story arcs in that order. There is no need to replay the arcs you already completed.
-
Continue into the material grouped as Final Season. That label describes a major grouping, not the end of all Monogatari stories.
-
Do not leave this entry out. Its short stories belong before Owarimonogatari in the source-publication sequence, even though the anime arrived later.
-
Keep both installments, released in 2015 and 2017 respectively. They are not interchangeable with Zoku Owarimonogatari.
-
Finish the core route here. It debuted theatrically in 2018 and later aired as six television episodes in 2019, which explains the different dates you may encounter.
-
Move into the continuation after the core route. Follow the released anime's episode sequence rather than trying to force its combined adaptation into a one-novel-per-season chart.
Why move Kizumonogatari, Hanamonogatari, and Koyomimonogatari?
The anime does not reproduce the novels' publication order. Kizumonogatari was delayed; Hanamonogatari aired after Second Season rather than in its original position; and the Koyomimonogatari anime followed the first Owarimonogatari installment despite its earlier novel placement. These differences are why a list can look plausible while silently mixing two orders.
Our recommendation restores those source placements. It is a recommendation, not the only valid way to enjoy the series.
What the anime release schedule actually looks like
If you prefer the historical release experience, use this comparison. The dates refer to original Japanese releases, not the date a title reached your local streaming service.
- Bakemonogatari: 2009–2010, including the online finale episodes.
- Nisemonogatari: 2012.
- Nekomonogatari: Black: December 2012.
- Monogatari Series Second Season: 2013.
- Hanamonogatari, then Tsukimonogatari: 2014.
- Owarimonogatari, first season: 2015.
- Kizumonogatari Part 1: January 8, 2016.
- Koyomimonogatari: began January 2016, overlapping the film-release period.
- Kizumonogatari Part 2: August 19, 2016; Part 3: January 6, 2017.
- Owarimonogatari, second season: August 2017.
- Zoku Owarimonogatari: theatrical release in November 2018, television broadcast in 2019.
- Off & Monster Season: its first released run aired July–October 2024.
The release-order wrinkle: Kizumonogatari is three films spread across a year, not a single 2016 event. Koyomimonogatari began between the first and second films. Any release list that groups the whole trilogy together is a practical simplification, not a perfectly chronological release record.
Off & Monster Season: what to do next
The initial Off & Monster Season anime run aired from July 6 to October 19, 2024. Additional episodes were announced in July 2025. The series reference also reports a further scheduling announcement in July 2026. Treat continuation announcements as announcements, not proof that every planned episode is already available.
For this guide, the reliable viewing instruction is simple: finish Zoku Owarimonogatari, then follow the released Off & Monster Season episodes in their anime order. Check the current release listing before assuming an announced continuation can be watched in your region.

Why we do not recommend chronology first
A calendar tells you when an event happens. It does not tell you when the story wants you to understand it. Monogatari uses retrospective context and shifting viewpoints, so chronological viewing changes how information reaches you.
Kizumonogatari's origin story comes before Bakemonogatari's events, but that does not mean you must start with the films. Likewise, moving whole seasons cannot produce a strict calendar route when those seasons contain stories set at different times.
Choose your route in one question

Monogatari watch order FAQ
Should I start with Bakemonogatari or Kizumonogatari?
We recommend Bakemonogatari first, then the Kizumonogatari trilogy for this route. Starting with Kizumonogatari follows the origin story's earlier fictional timing, but it is a different introduction.
Is Bakemonogatari only 12 episodes?
No. It has 15 episodes. The final three originally appeared online rather than in the initial television broadcast.
Where does Hanamonogatari go?
For novel-publication order, after Kabukimonogatari and before Otorimonogatari within Second Season. For anime release order, after the 2013 Second Season run.
Can I skip Koyomimonogatari?
For the complete core route, include it. Its shorter format is not a reason to treat it as a missing or optional season. Our checklist places it before Owarimonogatari to follow the source sequence.
Is Zoku Owarimonogatari from 2018 or 2019?
Both dates describe real releases: the theatrical debut was in 2018 and the television broadcast followed in 2019.
Does Final Season mean the franchise is finished?
No. Final Season is a grouping within the series. Off & Monster Season continues the anime beyond that core material.
Is this guide spoiler-free?
It avoids major plot outcomes and keeps story descriptions brief, but even titles and arc placements reveal some structural information. Use the checklist alone if you want the least context.
